What products are allowed?
What products are NOT allowed?
Fiber-based products (ALLOWED)
These are made from plant fibers, physically pressed or molded.
Examples:
Paper
Sugarcane fiber (bagasse)
Bamboo
Wood
Palm leaf
How they’re made:
Plants are broken down into fibers
Fibers are pressed into shape (like paper or cardboard)
No plastic resin involved
How they behave:
Break down naturally
Work in compost systems
Don’t turn into microplastics
Plastics/Bioplastics (NOT allowed)
These are still plastics, even if they come from plants.
Examples:
PLA
“Compostable plastic”
“Biodegradable plastic”
Corn-based plastic
Sugar-based plastic resin
How they’re made:
Plant sugars are chemically processed
Turned into a plastic resin
Molded just like normal plastic
How they behave:
Do NOT break down in real-world conditions
Break into microplastics
Contaminate compost and recycling
End up in the ocean looking exactly like plastic
